Overview

This qualification is essential for anyone wishing to become a CIEH registered trainer.* It is ideal for anyone who needs to understand the basics of training practice or wants to refine their training techniques. It encourages a flexible approach to training delivery which takes into account recent advances in accelerated learning and neuro-linguistic programming (NLP). Successful candidates will be able to structure, design and deliver interesting and stimulating training.

* Certain other training qualifications are also recognised, and conditions regarding technical knowledge and experience also apply.

The CIEH Professional Trainer course provides an assessment and certification opportunity for candidates who undertake a short programme, typically 3 days, covering the basic skills involved in the delivery of training courses to groups. The primary aim of the Professional Trainer course is to equip potential trainers with the core skills to design and deliver effective group training events. The qualification provides a basis of understanding, knowledge and skills. It is through practice and experience and continuing development that competence is maintained and enhanced. 

After participating in the skills sessions each candidate will be required to plan and deliver 2 microteaching  sessions which are observed and assessed. To complete the assessment the candidate must also produce a self evaluation report. Candidates  who are successful in their assessments will achieve a pass or credit award.  Practice sessions will be video-taped for delegates to improve their presentation skills.

Syllabus

The syllabus consists of seven broad learning outcomes outlined below and each training programme must incorporate them all.

1. Training needs and objectives
Appreciate the importance of matching the ability and needs of the group to the training programme, and understand the value of learning objectives which are clear, relevant and measurable.

2. The learning environment
Understand the impact of the training environment, including location, layout, timing and structure, style and approach of the trainer, and the nature and experience of the group.

3. Use of training aids
Be aware of the value of training aids and be able to select and use them appropriately and effectively.

4. Training methods
Be able to use training methods appropriate to the group, the subject and the learn the objectives, and be aware that individuals have differing preferences and aptitudes for learning styles.

5. Design and session planning
Understand the importance of planning and design of sessions using a variety of methods and approaches in order to achieve set objectives.

6. Delivery and Communication
Be able to competently deliver and manage a training session and communicate effectively

7. Education and assessment
Understand the importance of assessing and evaluating a training session, and be able to use feedback and self analysis to make improvements.
